Blagoevgrad is located in the southwestern part of Bulgaria. The city with a population of about 80,000 inhabitants is the largest city in Pirin Macedonia. It is located near Greece and Macedonia and has easy access to the capital of Bulgaria - Sofia, which is located 100 km north. Blagoevgrad is crossed by the international road E79 and a railway line that connects Central Europe with Greece. Blagoevgrad has a great cultural and historical heritage. The first traces of human activity date back to the 10th century BC and they are ceramic fragments. Blagoevgrad region abounds in natural resources. This includes a mild Mediterranean climate, numerous mineral springs, lush mountain forests and two famous rivers. Blagoevgrad is located at the foot of the southwestern slopes of Rila Mountain on both sides of the river Blagoevgradska Bistritsa - a left tributary of the river Struma, on the remains of the ancient Roman settlement Skaptopara. This feature makes Blagoevgrad an important cultural, administrative and industrial center for the southwestern region. There are also two universities in Blagoevgrad: Southwestern University "Neofit Rilski" and the first American university in Eastern Europe. The fame of the city and Bulgaria spreads around the world and the Ensemble for folk songs and dances "Pirin", winner of many national and international awards. Of particular interest to visitors to the city is the Revival district "Varosha" with its unique architecture. |
